On April 15th Scotland County Cooperative Extension held their annual Report to the People. This is a highlight of extension programs in the county.
The day started off with a breakfast at The Bagpiper Restaurant, a student operated restaurant located in Scotland High School and continued with a tour around the county ending at the Wagram Community Garden.
The first stop was at the newly constructed high tunnel greenhouse located at Scotland High School. The new greenhouse will produce fruits and vegetables for The Bagpiper Restaurant which will result in a cost saving of $3,000 per year to the restaurant.
Following the greenhouse tour participants travelled to the Wagram Community Garden. Garden participants shared how the garden has impacted their lives and what they have gained from the program. One participant shared that prior to having a garden plot she ate primarily frozen and canned vegetables. As a result of her gardening efforts she now consumes more fresh fruits and vegetables. Others shared how being a part of the garden is like a family, everyone is willing to help each other and teach each other how to improve their gardening skills. Another gardener said “I prepared a dinner for guests and everything on the table was grown in my garden.”
The Wagram Community Garden has been and continues to be very successful and plentiful. The garden participants are seeing the fruits of their labor and enjoying the benefits of producing their own food.
