This North Carolina Children, Youth, and Families at Risk (CYFAR) project uses community gardening to: empower communities to produce food for families, deliver hands-on nutrition education, create opportunities for youth to develop agri-related business skills, build leadership among community members, and provide engaging activities for family members of all ages to work together for a common purpose.

Math in the Garden

Starting from one teacher's passion to teach math in an engaging way that is both practical and relevant to students, the idea was born to hold a Math in the Garden camp this summer in Bertie County. Teaching math using a garden setting is a great way to inspire students and help them visualize basic mathematical principles. And as these students found out, math in the garden is fun!

Youth from the Piney Wood Chapel Missionary Baptist Church (the location of a recently revived community garden) participated in the camp during the week of June 18-22. The students learned about basic gardening principles, journaled and drew pictures, completed various engaging activities from this Math in the Garden book and learned about entrepreneurship principles and the possibilities that exist for selling fruits and vegetables.

Thanks to Dramaine Freeman for organizing and leading this group!
